The SGOT Test, also known as the Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase Test or AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) Test, is a blood test used to measure the level of SGOT enzyme in the bloodstream. SGOT is primarily found in the liver, heart, muscles, and other tissues. Elevated SGOT levels often signal liver damage, but it can also indicate issues related to the heart or muscle injury. Doctors usually recommend this test if you have symptoms like jaundice, abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, nausea, or if you are suspected of having conditions like hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, myocardial infarction (heart attack), or muscle disorders. A normal SGOT level is typically between 5 to 40 units per liter, but this range may slightly vary among laboratories. The SGOT Test is often performed along with the SGPT Test to better evaluate liver health. The ratio of SGOT to SGPT provides valuable information to differentiate between different types of liver and heart conditions, guiding doctors in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
